THE DEVELOPMENT OF POLYSEMY IN THE ENGLISH LEXICAL SYSTEM

The present study explores the development of polysemy within the English lexical system, focusing on the mechanisms, causes, and functional significance of multiple meanings in words. Polysemy, defined as the coexistence of several related meanings within a single lexical unit, is a fundamental feature of natural language that reflects both cognitive processes and historical language change. The research examines how polysemy emerges through semantic shifts such as metaphor, metonymy, generalization, and specialization, as well as through socio-cultural and communicative needs. The study also analyzes the role of context in interpreting polysemous words, emphasizing that meaning is not fixed but dynamically constructed in discourse. Special attention is given to the interaction between polysemy and linguistic economy, as well as its importance in vocabulary expansion without the necessity of creating entirely new lexical items. Furthermore, the paper highlights the challenges polysemy poses in language learning, translation, and lexicography, particularly in distinguishing between related meanings and homonyms
