COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF POLYSEMY IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK

Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of polysemy in English and Uzbek, focusing on its linguistic, cognitive, and translational aspects. Polysemy, the phenomenon of a single word having multiple related meanings, plays a significant role in both languages, influencing semantic interpretation, contextual understanding, and stylistic expression. The study examines primary, secondary, metaphorical, and metonymic types of polysemy, providing examples from both languages to illustrate similarities and differences. It also explores the challenges of translating polysemous words and offers strategies for achieving accurate and contextually appropriate translations. Furthermore, the article highlights the pedagogical importance of polysemy in language learning, demonstrating how understanding semantic cores and context-dependent meanings enhances learners’ vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills.
