THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF CONNECTING CONSTRUCTIONS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract

This study explores the theoretical foundations of connecting constructions in the English language, focusing on their linguistic nature, classification, and functional significance in discourse. Connecting constructions serve as essential devices that establish logical, semantic, and structural relationships between words, phrases, clauses, and larger textual units. The research draws on major linguistic theories in syntax, semantics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics to examine the role of connectors in creating coherence and cohesion. Particular attention is paid to the contributions of scholars who have investigated conjunctions, discourse markers, and linking expressions within English grammar. The study analyzes various categories of connecting constructions, including coordinating, subordinating, and conjunctive adverbial forms, and highlights their functions in both written and spoken communication.
