21ST-CENTURY SKILLS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING: INTEGRATING COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, CREATIVITY, AND CRITICAL THINKING INTO EFL/ESL CLASSROOMS

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technologies, global communication, and knowledge-based economies has reshaped expectations for language education. English Language Teaching (ELT) is no longer limited to grammatical accuracy and vocabulary development; it also aims to cultivate transferable competencies often called 21st-century skills. This article analyzes how core 21st-century skills—communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, digital literacy, and learner autonomy—align with modern ELT principles and how they can be operationalized through task-based learning, project-based learning, multimodal texts, and formative assessment. The paper synthesizes research-informed pedagogical approaches and proposes an integrative classroom framework that links language objectives with skill outcomes. Practical examples, assessment indicators, and implementation considerations are presented to support teachers in designing lessons that improve English proficiency while preparing learners for academic, professional, and social participation in a globalized world
