A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF APPOSITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS IN ENGLISH

Abstrak

Appositive constructions constitute an important component of English syntax and play a significant role in both spoken and written communication. They enable speakers and writers to identify, explain, rename, or characterize nouns in a concise and grammatically efficient manner. The present study examines the structural organization of appositive constructions in English by focusing on their syntactic patterns, grammatical characteristics, semantic relationships, and communicative functions. Particular attention is devoted to the distinction between restrictive and non-restrictive appositives, their positional flexibility within sentences, and their contribution to textual cohesion and stylistic variation. The article also discusses the use of appositive constructions in academic discourse, journalism, literary language, and everyday communication, demonstrating their importance for effective language use and advanced linguistic competence. The findings emphasize that appositive constructions represent a productive grammatical mechanism through which English achieves precision, economy, and expressiveness in communication
