STRATEGIES FOR FORMING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The article discusses the formation of communicative competence at the tertiary level and the importance of developing students’ ability to use a foreign language effectively in real-life situations. Based on the works of Hymes, Canale and Swain, and other scholars, communicative competence is viewed as a combination of linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic abilities. The paper reviews several teaching methods used in higher education, including Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Learning, and Content and Language Integrated Learning. The discussion also highlights the role of technology and the teacher as a facilitator. Results show that communicative and interactive approaches improve students’ fluency, motivation, and confidence, though challenges such as large class sizes, lack of resources, and limited teacher training remain. The article concludes that with proper support and innovative teaching strategies, universities can successfully develop communicative competence among students
