Аннотация

Today’s higher education landscape for international economics is caught between two worlds. On one hand, global financial markets are more tangled and interdependent than ever; on the other, the actual physical movement of students is becoming increasingly difficult due to rising socio-economic and geopolitical hurdles. This paper takes a critical look at the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) framework—a specialized branch of Virtual Exchange (VE)—as a direct answer to these challenges. While the "study abroad" dream is often sidelined by tight budgets or border restrictions, COIL provides a scalable "internationalization at home" alternative. By leveraging the latest data from the DAAD (2025) and the OECD, this research tracks how real-time, cross-border collaboration sharpens a student’s technical economic skills alongside their intercultural "soft skills." Interestingly, the findings show that students in these economics-focused virtual exchanges actually outperform their traditional peers when it comes to navigating complex regulatory landscapes and high-stakes, cross-cultural negotiations. Ultimately, the argument is clear: if we want to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) for inclusive, high-quality education in a digital-first economy, COIL can no longer be an elective—it must be a core pillar of the curriculum
